Review of Important Concepts

Brilliant job with your dogs, folks!  They're making all the right connections and, most importantly, having a blast while they're working!

The take home messages of this week are to keep perspective on what you're asking of the dog. Remember, if it's a new environment,go back to what they know. If it's a new skill, stick with an environment they've worked in.

  • As more possibilities present themselves to you, stay focused on the dog's persistence in searching to tell you whether you need to make an adjustment.

  • Make sure your dog is still enjoying the game. There's no harm in going back to "the shell game" if it keeps your dog grinning.

  • Keep developing those problem solving skills and building stamina by re-hiding while you're dog's still searching (after they've found the source.)

Week Five Homework

  • Continue box work and environmental objects, with several hides outside the boxes.

  • Set up hides without any boxes present. Remember to use the objects to give the dog information about the scent.

  • When hiding in boxes, work toward having the box flaps completely closed.

  • Practice elevation a little higher than before. Just a little.

  • Try to work in at least 5 different locations

  • No grassy, outdoor areas

  • If you plan to continue with the next round of classes please register here so we know if there are any openings for others who are waiting for a spot in the Intro to Odor class.

With Much Gratitude

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing to share yourselves and your dogs with us during this six weeks.  It's been exciting, educational and incredibly fun to watch you all learn and grow.  We're looking forward to continuing this fine ride with those who are staying on.  And if you're not, we hope to see you and your dog out and about -- sniffing and grinning!
